10 things you should always buy second-hand

Second-hand doesn't mean second best.

Did you know that pre-loved items can add more value than they would brand new? Here are 10 things you should always buy second-hand.

Books

We all know text books aren't cheap and considering you’ll just need that tiny paragraph on one of the back pages, why buy it brand new?

Consider visiting second-hand book stores filled with one-of-a-kind treasures or even services such as Zookal or Jekkle for your textbook needs. It's the same for novels - there are plenty of bargains to be found when it comes to the big reads.

DVDs

In a world where streaming services are right at your fingertips, who would even consider buying DVDs? There are plenty of reasons. The ease of slipping a physical disc and pressing play without worrying if you’re maxing out that month’s data is certainly one. Let’s not forget the added outtakes and deleted scenes that streaming doesn’t quite give you. Plus, when you’re done, you can always sell the DVDs back.

Games and game consoles

You can find great bargains on second-hand games and consoles. It will give you the same enjoyment whether it’s brand-new or pre-owned. Plus, if you go through a second-hand retailer, the item will be put through a testing process to make sure it works. Many items also come with a 90-day warranty.

What better way to save yourself a pretty penny?

Clothing

Once you start buying second-hand clothing you’ll wonder why you waited so long. From designer clothes or back-to-school gear for your kids, you can buy second-hand clothing practically anywhere. Try Facebook Marketplace or your local op shop to get on-trend for less.

Bikes

Can you imagine the money you’ll save on your daily commute? New bikes tend to lose between 20 and 40 per cent of the value once they leave the store, so buying a second-hand bike will basically end up paying for itself.

Jewellery

Contrary to popular belief, second-hand jewellery isn't always a result of a relationship gone awry. Changing fashion trends and sellers who simply want to declutter their jewellery collection can bring unique second-hand pieces to shelves. Not only do you increase your chances of finding one-of-a-kind pieces, you also get to avoid the 45 to 110 per cent mark-up that you can get at jewellery retailers.

Musical instruments

If you’re tossing up between a piano or a piccolo, it’s no treble - buy both instead. Second-hand musical instruments are ideal for anybody interested in starting their musical journey but aren’t ready to drop the big bucks. There are symphonies of sounds out there waiting to be plucked up by future Mozarts and Beethovens!

Cars

We’ve all heard the old adage that a new car loses around 20 per cent of its value the minute you drive it out of the car yard. So why wear the cost?

Second-hand cars are a great investment if you choose the right one. Do your research and only buy from trusted sources. You could pick up a near-new car for a fraction of the price.

Sporting equipment

Getting fit and healthy is easier than you think. Second-hand exercise gear, like treadmills and weights, will do the same job as if it was straight out of the box and it'll save you a fair whack too.

The dress

For a dress that will only be worn once, does it really need to be new? Instead, check out second-hand wedding or evening dresses to see if something takes your fancy. Websites like Still White offer excellent deals – and you can sell the dress after your big day.

Know your stuff

Due diligence is everything regardless of the item.

For peace of mind, when you buy from a store or outlet (instead of a private seller) you're entitled to Australian Consumer Law guarantees. At Cashies, we test our items to make sure they're in top working order before they're sold, and many items come with a 90-day warranty.

Whether you’re looking for a retro game console or a great bike, buying second-hand should always be your first port of call.
